Darong, Sta. Cruz, Davao del Sur — As a part of their strategy to co-create safe, empowered, and sustainable communities, Aboitiz Foundation, Inc. partnered with UP NOAH Center and WeatherPhilippines Foundation for a two-day Community-based Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Training (CBDRRM) with the community leaders of Barangay Darong, Sta. Cruz, Davao del Sur.
UP NOAH researchers served as training officers as they helped in the participatory vulnerability and capacity assessment of the participants. During the social and resource mapping, the community leaders themselves identified areas that they deemed as most vulnerable to landslide, flood, and storm surge hazards.
Houses of key people (e.g. doctors, nurses, lawyers, teachers, barangay council members, health workers, etc.) were also identified. Participants, above all else, mapped their safest way to safety in case there is an impending threat of danger in their vicinity.
UP NOAH maps are used as basis for Barangay Darong’s hazards and risk assessment, and DRRM & Contingency planning.
The training is participated by more than twenty five participants coming from employees of Hedcor Sibulan, Inc., Sta. Cruz LDRRM Officers, BDRRM Council, Barangay Officials and Community Representatives (Teacher, Indigenous People, Living in Danger Zone and Vulnerable Group).
